Lunch On A Flower

Took this picture over lunch on a very bright sunny day at Mears Park.  The background is so dark because of a combination of reasons.  One, I was trying to isolate the flower and have the background be blurry.  To do this requires a large aperture.  Second, a large aperture lets in a lot of light.  Third, it was very bright out and a lot of light means I had to have a really short shutter speed of 1/3000th of a second.  Fourth and finally, there was a rock bench behind the flower that was in shadows, and with such a short shutter speed it was not exposed and became blackish.

On my main monitor this image looked great right out of the camera, but I noticed some very pronounced odd brownish color artifacts on the red sections of the flower petals when viewed on my old LCD monitor.  Because I thought a bunch of you would also see these artifacts, I decided to try and eliminate them.  I ended up doing some contrast curves on the red channel to get rid of the artifacts.  I hope it looks good now, and that I didn’t cause other problems.

Let me know what you think!

Riverview Cemetery

Went out walking tonight during sunset and stumbled upon the Riverview Cemetery.  Everytime I have ever been to a cemetery it has always been bright and sunny, and the sunset really adds a different perspective.

HDR On A Few Flowers

Took a bunch of flower shots over the weekend, and thought some of them needed a little bit of something to match what I was seeing out there.  I decided to mess around in Photomatix a bit and ended up with the below.  With the shallow depth of field the Photomatix logo really sticks out!  Because of the resizing the image has become softer, so click on the image for a larger view; I’m considering sharpening the smaller images in the future.
